Genetic Modification: A Primer

So what exactly is a GM seed?

GM seeds (also called ‘GMO’ – genetically modified organisms – and ‘transgenic’) are often confused with hybrid seeds. In fact, some people claim that hybridization is just another form of genetic modification. Not exactly. In a nutshell, here’s the difference:

  • Non-hybrid seeds (think: heirloom or open pollinated varieties) can be saved and replanted from year to year and the resulting fruit remains “true to seed.” In other words, that funny little tomato you remember from grandma’s garden? If you planted seeds saved from that tomato, you’d get the same fruit today.
  • Hybrid seeds are the product of cross-breeding two varieties of one type of fruit or vegetable in order to improve yield, pest and disease resistance, flavor, or shelf life. It’s kind of like breeding a Labrador retriever with a poodle to get a Labradoodle. Hybrid seeds generally do not grow true to seed.
  • Genetically modified seeds are altered by inserting DNA from outside of the species into a plant seed. Kind of like trying to breed a cat and a dog. Mother Nature doesn’t allow such a thing to happen, but the miracle of modern technology lets scientists cross that barrier. GM seeds are patented and it’s actually illegal to save and replant some of these seeds.

How Dr. Oz Got It Wrong on Organics | Mother Jones

If you buy organic fruits and veggies that are local and in season they usually cost no more than
Commercially grown foods and sometime are even less because they are sourced closer to home.  Shop the bulk section of your coop or grocery store and stay away from the processed food isles.  Like any good shopper watch for sales. I have recently noticed that even a large store like Safeway is getting more into the Organics and non-GMO bandwagon by labeling things clearer. They have even gone so far as to make sure that consumers know that if a fruit or vegetable has that little sticker on them that starts with a 9 it is organic, if it starts with another number it is not.

The SunRayZOR

My friend SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard have been working hard to get some things eco friendly and off the grid. I think SunRay has done it, I got the pleasure of riding this thing and frankly….damn scared me! 🙂 Especially as we all live on this hill that drops down 400 FT I know Sunray has taken this thing downhill..I don’t think I would venture to do that. It is fun and economical and I believe in what they are doing. I am so thankful for living on the Homestead and seeing all the wonderful things he does. Right now he is involved in a waterwheel project on his property and we will post some more pictures and video of that as well, it’s beautiful in the woods. Check out his stuff,

HGTV has arrived

Well almost.  HGTV is arriving tomorrow on the homestead to do an article and tv show about Sunray Kelley. It is exciting.  A lot of work has been done on the homestead to prepare so you won’t be disappointed.  It is wonderful that shows like that are really tapping into the driving force of natural buildings, cob, yurts, and tiny homes.  We just found out as well that The New York Times is arriving in October to do a story about Sunray and the Homestead.  The excitement continues, don’t miss it. 🙂

You can check out other info on Sunray at

He has just completed a new build near here that is beautiful and did a complete kitchen remodel on his own home which is wonderful. Keep looking as we will be posting updated photos on his website, facebook, and here.

Replanting and Slug control

Well, I am kind of feeling I am losing the battle with my garden between all this wonderful rain in the Pacific Northwest which does nothing but harvest more slugs.  The only thing I really try to concentrate on is the fact that we live in a wonderful and beautiful GREEN environment.  It is beautiful here regardless of the weather. Every night I go on slug patrol, I pick them off my plants and throw them into my goldfish pond.  Hope my goldfish are happy, they should be fat and pregnant by now. 🙂  Regardless I need to replant garlic, onion, and carrots.  We have not had enough sun to really facilitate a good grow.  It may be still a couple of weeks before we actually see summer even though today is the first day.  One wonderful note is my Kohlrabies, beets, and potatoes are thriving. My cauliflower and broccoli are trying their damnedest.  So far my Daisies have survived and I look forward to a beautiful flower garden. Unfortunately I had to take my Passion Flower Vine and Jasmine into the house so not to be eaten, they are too important to me. I do have a few Heirloom Tomatoes thriving in my greenhouse that will make wonderful spaghetti sauce and salsa.  I found a treasure of which I will share a pic.  It is called Dittany of Create Oregano.  Otherwise known and whoolley oregano which I have been searching for several years. It easily propagates,. just cut and put in water and then you have several plants.
